Armed Civilian Group Formed To Guard Streets in Sheepshead Bay, Brighton, Midwood
We received the following letter about a civilian group that plans to patrol Sheepshead Bay streets:
Holding Down Brooklyn South, a group of 100+ Brooklyn residents and business owners will be patrolling Brooklyn starting tonite armed with legal weapons, including baseball bats and more vowing to protect their community from looters. Group will meet tonight at 6:30 PM on Sheepshead Bay and Emmons Avenue.
“We are here to protect our community in Southern Brooklyn. We are here to defend only. We have respect for the struggle against racism, and the right to protest. But there is no right to destroy the place where we and our families live,” said Isaak Boltyansky and David Brodsky, community organizers. “Shame on the Mayor of New York for not protecting us. People will not be attacking cops on our watch nor will we watch them destroy businesses.”
Hundreds tonight will patrol and protect Midwood, Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay.

I just heard that the WTC memorial is a target tonight. What I’ve been seeing for the past week is sickening. Defacing churches & setting them on fire. Those are not protesters! The police are outnumbered & can’t handle the situation. I plan on going to the WTC memorial tonight & peacefully protect the area with other patriots.

South Brooklyn very quickly got the message on Monday when we heard they were coming here. Thank god no one did, but look how fast we all communicated and began to network. Great job everyone.

I can understand the feeling of wanting to protect your property and neighborhood. However, it is important not to blame this on protestors and the BlackLivesMatter movement. Looters are not representative of the movement and are selfish people who try to take advantage of the chaos incited by the police. The travesty is that someone like me- having graduated at the top of my law school class- would be vulnerable to attack if I were to be in your neighbourhood because I am African American (likely to be seen by you as a “thug” or “animal”) and therefore a likely looter in your opinion. But don’t worry, I just looked on Zillow at some of the homes in your communities and I’d never bother to come to your trailer park.
That’s an abstract lie. We are surrounded by people of color in this community, people we have lived and worked and shopped with for decades. Don’t prematurely victimize yourself, and just put yourself in the position of an immigrant refugee community that has had nothing to do with these protests and just wants to make sure they can go back to work the next day. Look at the footage, if you don’t like the news feel free to check social media; these people aren’t playing unarmed, they’re throwing bricks, stabbing cops, broad-day shootings – all in the last 3 days. I believe in justice for George Floyd, I believe that man was murdered and I see eye to eye with all people who think this was a miscarriage of justice. In my day, starting in the early 60’s when I first moved to Seacoast in 1st grade, Brighton was full of Eastern European immigrants who had escaped Communism and Fascism! Last night I could not fill a sleep, i was scared to death. I have nothing to protect myself and my elderly mother. A brief background: I am 67, was born on Kings Hwy and have lived in and around Brighton Beach my whole life. My wife was born in Chernovitz a decade after her parents survived the Holocaust in which most of their families perished. We have lived in an apartment house on Neptune Ave for the past 40 years.
I have seen the neighborhood go through big changes. For many decades, this was a wonderful neighborhood but by the 70’s it was dangerous to walk around after even 7:00 pm. There were gangs and drug dealers all around Brighton Beach. I’m very grateful for the immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Yes there was resentment towards them in the beginning from the Americans who lived here but because of these brave and hard working people, this is now once again a beautiful, prospering and generally safe neighborhood. Every year it’s even getting better here. and we all want this to continue.
Now we are in unprecedented times around the world. First the pandemic and now the looting and people are frightened and angry. We really don’t know what’s going to happen next and we all want to make things as safe as possible for all. It doesn’t matter if you love or hate Trump, de Blasio or Cuomo. I have voted for people from all parties. I go by their stand on the issues, not by the party. We absolutely don’t want criminals coming in from the outside who are committing terrible crimes and taking advantage of the current situation. Yes, it’s a good thing to have neighborhood patrol groups. It doesn’t matter who the mayor is; this is a very good thing to have and to continue into the future. We can never only depend on the police to do all the surveillance but let’s do it right. Curtis Sliwa has been doing this for about 40 years already and, love him or not, he’s done a great job. It’s essential to not harass or hurt any innocent people because of ethnic, racial or any other differences. If we do that, then we are in danger of violating other people’s rights, like the way ours are being violated right now.
I think it’s important that the patrolling be done as professionally and responsibly as possible. It would be good if our patrol leaders can work hand-in-hand with the local police precincts so that people are trained to do it the right and safe way. Maybe they can receive a certificate that authorizes them as an official neighborhood patroller.
I haven’t looked at Curtis Sliwa’s website but I think that it would be good to learn from him but not to count on him to help us. Let’s not assault innocent people and to do our best to protect our wonderful neighborhoods!

Oh god, the Russians in Brighton are such racist bootlickers. I grew up there. This vigilante group is going to end up intimidating and harassing any black people in a group of more than two. These people are taught from birth that black people (and gay people, incidentally) are basically sub-human.

I avoid talking about politics, but I am shocked by what I read here right now. I am quite sure that several people on this forum are provocateurs. It’s so easy to offend another person hiding behind words. These provocateurs are not difficult to identify, they are distinguished by aggressive statements, of a personal nature, obscene statements and so on. There are insults from the opposite side too. I suppose these provocateurs are too deep in the American community and influence our life and these changes. I guess this is from the outside.
I have been living in this neoborod for quite some time. I am Russian and have good relations with all of Brooklyn neighborhoods. We play basketball in the black community, we work and are friends with everyone. We have long been Americans, we respect American values.

I condemn George Floyd’s racial murder, but I am surprised by the reaction to the murder of mayor Bill de Blasio. Only half a year ago, it was Jersey City shooting: SIX DEAD, suspects targeted Jewish grocery. I am surprised by the reaction of our mayor who did not attach any importance to this even in 1% of how he is engaged in George Floyd’s murder and all this coup now.
When I saw him on TV on the border with Mexico, when he demanded to open the border, I immediately wanted to ask him
