State of the Art Culinary Kitchen To Re-Open at Dewey High School

On Friday, September 13, 2019, New York City Council Member Mark Treyger (Coney Island, Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Sea Gate) will be joined by NYC Department of Education Chancellor Richard Carranza, School Construction Authority President Lorraine Grillo, John Dewey High School Principal Connie Hamilton, United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew, and staff from District 21, for a ribbon cutting to announce the opening of the brand new Culinary Arts Kitchen classroom at John Dewey High School.

The new state-of-the-art culinary kitchen and learning lab at John Dewey High School in Gravesend was built with more than $3 million dollars in capital funding, provided by Council Member Mark Treyger, Speaker Corey Johnson, and former Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. The upgraded culinary kitchen that includes a Teachers’ Demo Station with a deep fryer, grill, double decker convection oven, speed racks, table mixing machines, stove, sink, and exhaust hood with a mirror above it. Five student work stations have stainless steel culinary materials, a compartment sink, pot racks, veggie sink, hand sinks, a dishwasher, commercial refrigerators and freezers. In addition, there are two student computer stations with printers, and a Smart Board.

The new kitchen facility will enable students interested in the culinary arts to engage in rigorous Career and Technical Education programming, and the school is developing ways for the kitchen to serve the wider community. Council Member Mark Treyger visited the un-refurbished culinary kitchen a few years ago and tasted some of the delicious food prepared by students in the school’s Business and Culinary/Hospitality Arts Academy, which, combined with the ambitious instructional leadership at the school, led him to allocate funding. The hospitality sector continues to be a significant area of job growth in New York City, and the new facility at John Dewey High School will help prepare these students to be competitive in this growing industry.
