Trump Endorses Malliotakis For Congress
The Staten Island Advance is reporting that Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis informed them that she has the “full support” of President Donald Trump for Congress in District 11 that includes all of Staten Island, as well as parts of southern Brooklyn.
On Wednesday, she traveled to Washington as a guest of the President at the White House during the signing of USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement). At the event, she received the crucial endorsement: “He told me I have his full support… We were just talking in general about New York State about just how important this [trade agreement] is for our state and he asked me how things were going, he asked me about the campaign, and told me ‘you have my endorsement.’ … When you put your heart and soul into something and put yourself out there it’s nice to have support and to hear those encouraging words from the president. It was obviously something I was delighted to hear and I appreciate it.”
President Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 10% in 2016 within the lines of the Congressional District that Congressman Max Rose currently represents, so while he is unpopular in most other parts of New York, he remains popular in Staten Island and southern Brooklyn, making his endorsement very valuable in this race.
In December Congressman Max Rose voted to impeach Trump despite the President’s popularity in the district, leading most nonpartisan observers to believe that Malliotakis is the likely favorite to win the race. While the election is still more than 9 months away, it is hard to imagine a world where 1 in 8 Trump voters will also vote for Max Rose after his impeachment vote, which is exactly what the Congressman will need in order to defeat Nicole Malliotakis.
