Congressman Max Rose Votes To Change “Racist” Name of Washington, D.C. To Douglass Commonwealth

The House of Representatives passed bill H.R. 51 that would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state and would change the name of “District of Columbia” to “Douglass Commonwealth.” All our local Congressmen Max Rose, Hakeem Jeffries and Yvette Clarke voted in favor.

Democrats view it as racist or at least insensitive to name the locale after Christopher Columbus and prefer the capital to be named after a famous black person who was born a slave, but became a national abolitionist leader. All but one Democrat in the House of Representatives voted in favor. Republican Congressmen universally voted against the bill, and for now they promise not to allow its passage in the Senate, where they presently hold the majority – at least until the end of this year.

Despite being a lightning rod for the BLM and leftist activists, Columbus is viewed as a national hero by many Italians, and Italian-Americans in particular consider him a symbol of ethnic pride. That won’t matter much to Congress members Clarke and Jeffries, but the congressional district Max Rose represents has the highest number of Italian-Americans of any district in the nation. Just as with his vote to impeach Donald Trump despite being in a district where the President won by 10% in 2016, Congressman Rose simply didn’t have a choice. Sometimes, no matter how much you need to position yourself as a centrist, it is necessary for any politician to stick with the party line because the leadership imposes “discipline.”

Supporting impeachment, and thus antagonizing 55% of his district that voted (and likely will vote again) for Trump was a necessary, but terrible move by Rose. Antagonizing Italian-American voters, even those who dislike the President, presents an even wider problem for the freshman Congressman’s attempt to get re-elected.

Republicans also introduced the following amendments to the bill, but Congressman Rose voted against them:

  • No Defunding of Police
  • Prohibition on Autonomous Zones and Obstruction of Law Enforcement
  • Protection of National Monuments and Memorials
  • Ban on the Use of Taxpayer Funds for Campaigns
  • Guarantee of 2nd Amendment Rights
  • No Sanctuary City Status
  • Continued Participation in the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program

  1. He is a radical that was backed by the Democrats and needs to be voted out! A glorious red wave needs to take place to cover our nation to get rid of all the trash in government that are destroying our great nation. God bless America, God bless our President Donald J. Trump and all that we hold dear. L

  2. Any service member who is a Democrat? I don’t need or value their service in anyway whatsoever! Just like we don’t need tranny’s in the military, we should exclude all marxists (Democrats)!

  3. I was wrong voting for you. I’ll never do it again. And I’ll try to convince others not to vote for you. You are a milk toast. You are soft. I also think you just go where the getting is good. Just side with the current trend. Mindless. What an error.

  4. Did Columbus do some horrible things? Yes. Does Douglas deserve honor? Yes. Is “District of Columbia” a racist name? No. The name wasn’t given with the intention of insulting Native Americans (who, by the way, weren’t affected by Columbus, since he never reached the mainland) and it shouldn’t insult blacks. Are the ancestors of people who were hurt by Columbus demanding the name change? No. If you’re going to change a name that’s been used for hundreds of years, you should have a better reason.

  5. Racism may be one of the ultimates in ignorance and stupidity, but some of the reactions to it are gaining ground. Even Russia was smart enough to put statues of Lenin (that weren’t destroyed) into museums so his reign of terror could be DISCUSSED. But NO…lets’ tear this M.F.er down so we can “destroy history”, because we want to forget it…and then possibly repeat it. Smart!?!

  6. I love this country, a country that gave freedom to all walks of people, but its not good enough. When are people going to realize this is not about racism, its about how much these waste of lives can get away with, i will bet you ask 1000 Americans in this B.S circle what is the reason why they want these statues torn down they have no clue. They are a disgrace to America..
