Treyger Obtains Funding For Southern Brooklyn Cleaning Services

Council Member Mark Treyger announced significant investments in clean-up initiative funding and additional litter basket pick-up services to address this quality-of-life concern to help keep Southern Brooklyn neighborhoods clean. Council Member Treyger saved and restored funding for beautification clean-up efforts to improve major commercial street corridors in the neighborhoods of Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend and Coney Island. Additionally, the funding he secured provides seniors and persons with disabilities help with electronic recycling. For Fiscal Year 2021, Council Member Treyger secured $130,000 in funding to build on previous investments in keeping major street corridors in Southern Brooklyn safe and free of litter.

The increase of additional sanitation services to the “hot spots” on a block or specific corridor will begin on October 10, 2020. Increasing clean-up services to Southern Brooklyn has been a major priority for Council Member Treyger and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, he hosted multiple neighborhood clean-up events to target problematic zones. In this year’s budget, the $130,000 for new clean-up initiatives will enhance the major residential and commercial street corridors in Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Coney Island and Gravesend to ensure our neighborhoods are kept clean and tidy.

Wildcat Service Corporation will provide four new routes to supplement the current DSNY sanitation services:

  • Every Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday litter clean-ups will take place on 86th Street from 18th Avenue to 26th Ave; on Avenue U from McDonald Avenue to 86th Street; on Kings Highway from McDonald Avenue to Stillwell Avenue; and on 18th Avenue.
  • Sweep Up Saturday will be a tidy-up day around the district based on community input. Constituents can email councildistrict47@gmail.com or call 718-307-7151 to report areas of concern.
  • E-waste removal services will be offered free of charge to seniors and for people with disabilities.

“Our residents and businesses deserve to live and work in safe, clean neighborhoods. I want to thank DSNY and Wildcat Service Corporation for actualizing the clean-up initiatives in the district,” said Council Member Mark Treyger (Bensonhurst, Coney Island, Gravesend, Sea Gate). “I fought hard to protect this funding for my district and I will continue to focus on beautification efforts to keep our neighborhoods in Southern Brooklyn free of litter, garbage and waste on our major street corridors.”
